Bethel Temple of Longview's
history is one that began and continues to be one of spiritualism, dedication, and determination. In 1920, under the
ministry of Evangelist Adelia Green, Sis. Leola Jones and Sis. Everleen Sample received the Holy Ghost and thus it began.
Afterwards, meetings were held in various location (homes), but principally at homes of the members on Preachers Hill and
at the Green Street store, owned by Elder J. Frank Jones, who was later pastor of the church.
As God blessed, the membership grew,
and the homes of Evangelist Green and others were too small, a 2 room house on what is now Henderson Street was rented.
Subsequently, the U.K.T. Hall was rented to house services. On March 9, 1921, land was purchased on Lomond Street from
Mr. J.H. Fisher. A wood-frame building was purchased for use as the Lord continued to bless the congregation to grow
and prosper.
Various Pastors and Preachers have
ministered in the Church which in 1921 became known as Church of Christ (P.A.W.) then in 1926 became Bethel Temple Church
of Christ.
However, we must make special mention
of Elder Timothy Young, who was ordained and installed as Pastor in 1921, but soon departed for the evangelistic field, preaching
all over the U.S. until he settled down to pastor again in 1946, succeeding Elder John Sanders who was pastor at that time.
Elder Timothy Young pastored until his passing in 1967. Elder A.D. Brown became the next pastor. Various other
pastors and preachers have been shepherds and ministers for His people. Some of the most notable pastors and preachers
include Elder Dunlap Chenault, Elder J. Frank Jones, Elder Salisbury, Elder Coates, and Elder John Sanders.
These men, who served as leaders
either officially or unofficially, were to be the vital links that maintained the growing congregation.
In 1976, a young man came to preach
a revival in Texas. He had been on the evangelistic field for a total of three weeks. Following the leading of
God, this young man accepted an invitation from the members of Bethel Temple to move, with his family, from Syracuse, New
York, to become their pastor and leader. Under the leadership of Bishop Jones, God blessed the Bethel membership richly
until Bethel outgrew the Lomond Street building which had been occupied for 59 years.
The Lord provided through competent
leadership, love and hard work, the building located on the corner of Alpine and Glover Drive. This marked a triumphant
struggle for the congregation. It served as a beacon of light to inspire them to continue to carry the message of Christ
in the Longview community ever upward and onward.
In March 1993, Bethel Temple family
was able to secure our present edifice located on Mobberly Ave. In 1994, Suffragan Bishop Robert L. Evans accepted the
task of taking the church to the next realm of ministry by accepting the role of pastor of Bethel Temple. Bishop
Evans and his wife, Mary, relocated to Texas from Canto, Ohio to accomplish this work which God called them to. The
ministry of Suffragan Bishop Evans has been one of love, dedication, and sacrifice which has resulted in a multiplicity of
blessings. During his administration, Bethel Temple of Longview has grown in membership and scope. The past year
has seen the development of an effective Evangelism Outreach ministry, a growing youth and teen organization, and fruitful
Bible class ministries in Henderson and Tyler at a college campus.
